Badain Jaran Desert Trekking Tour from Yinchuan to Lanzhou – 16 Days

Tour Overview

This Badain Jaran Desert trekking tour is a rare overland journey through some of the most remote and historically layered landscapes in northwestern China. Beginning in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, the route first explores the frontier world of Helan Mountain rock art, Western Xia heritage, Buddhist monuments, and desert-edge settlements, before crossing westward into Alxa and the immense desert country of western Inner Mongolia.

The heart of the program is the multi-day trek in the Badain Jaran Desert, a place of giant sand mountains, hidden lakes, remote temple sites, and long horizons. This desert is now internationally recognized for its exceptional landscape values: UNESCO describes it as a desert of dense mega-dunes and numerous lakes set in a hyper-arid environment, and it was added to the World Heritage List in 2024.

What makes this journey especially rewarding is that it is not only a desert adventure. It also links together several cultural worlds: the Tangut legacy of the Western Xia, old Buddhist sites near the Yellow River, ruins on the edge of the Gobi, and finally the Silk Road cities of Zhangye, Wuwei, and Lanzhou. Along the way, the landscapes shift dramatically from irrigated oasis cities to dry escarpments, gravel plains, dune seas, and historic corridor towns.

This is not a soft sightseeing tour. It is best understood as a serious desert overland expedition with cultural depth, made suitable for adventurous travelers who want both historical substance and remote natural beauty.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Yinchuan Activities: airport arrival, meet and transfer, hotel check-in Drive distance: around 25 to 40 km Drive time: around 45 minutes to 1 hour Trekking time: none Altitude: Yinchuan approx. 1,100 m Overnight: Yinchuan

Arrive today in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Compared with China’s eastern megacities, Yinchuan feels more spacious and more closely connected to the landscapes that shaped the frontier history of northwestern China. This is a city where oasis agriculture, desert-edge geography, Islamic cultural presence, and old imperial borderland history all meet. Upon arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel in town. The rest of the day is kept easy so that you can settle in comfortably after the flight and prepare for the overland journey ahead.

  • Day 2: Helan Mountain Rock Art, Baisikou Twin Pagodas and the 108 Stupas Activities: Helan Mountain rock art, Baisikou Twin Pagodas, 108 Stupas, return to Yinchuan Drive distance: around 180 to 220 km total Drive time: around 4.5 to 5.5 hours total Trekking time: around 2 to 3 hours of easy site walking Altitude: 1,100 m to around 1,500 m during excursions Overnight: Yinchuan

Today is a full exploration day around Yinchuan, combining rock art, Buddhist architecture, and the wider desert-edge geography of Ningxia. Begin with the Helan Mountain rock art area, where the stony slopes and dry mountain environment preserve a visual record of ancient human presence. The Helan range forms one of the great natural backdrops of Ningxia and historically marked an important environmental frontier between settled zones and harsher steppe-desert country. Continue to the Baisikou Twin Pagodas, which add an architectural and religious dimension to the day. Later, proceed to the famous 108 Stupas near the reservoir area. These stupas are arranged in rows on the slope above the water and form one of the most distinctive Buddhist monuments in the region. Modern tourism material for Ningxia continues to identify the 108 Stupas and the Qingtongxia Yellow River canyon/reservoir area as one of the province’s key sightseeing experiences. Return to Yinchuan in the late afternoon.

  • Day 3: Yinchuan to Alxa Zuoqi via the Western Xia Tombs and Helan Great Wall Section Activities: Western Xia Imperial Tombs, Sanguankou Great Wall excursion, transfer to Alxa Zuoqi Drive distance: around 210 to 260 km Drive time: around 5 to 6 hours Trekking time: around 2 hours of site walking Altitude: around 1,100 m to 1,600 m Overnight: Alxa Zuoqi

After breakfast, check out and leave Yinchuan for Alxa Zuoqi. On the way, visit the Western Xia Imperial Tombs, one of the major historical sites of the Ningxia region and one of the clearest reminders that this was once the political heartland of the Tangut-ruled Western Xia Kingdom. The Western Xia Tombs remain one of Yinchuan’s best-known heritage sites in current Ningxia travel promotion. Later, make an excursion to the Ming Great Wall section at Sanguankou in the Helan Mountain area. Here the mood becomes more austere and frontier-like. The scenery is wide, dry, and strongly defensive in character, giving a clearer sense of how fragile the historical line between agrarian empire and the steppe-desert world once was. Continue westward and arrive in Alxa Zuoqi, where the atmosphere already feels more remote and more strongly connected to the desert interior.

  • Day 4: Alxa Zuoqi to Ejina Qi across the Western Desert Margins Activities: long desert crossing drive, stops en route, changing desert scenery Drive distance: around 680 to 760 km Drive time: around 9 to 11 hours Trekking time: short photo and rest walks only Altitude: mostly between 900 m and 1,300 m Overnight: Ejina Qi

Today is one of the longest overland transfer days of the expedition. Leave Alxa Zuoqi in the morning and drive toward Ejina Qi, crossing huge open spaces where settlement becomes increasingly sparse and the landscapes turn more severe. The day is not about monuments alone but about scale: gravel plains, desert horizons, isolated vegetation, and the growing sense of entering far western Inner Mongolia. Stopovers may be made at locations such as Five Trees, Agate Shoal, and other desert points of interest depending on road and field conditions. If weather, light, and atmospheric conditions are favorable, this region can sometimes produce mirage-like visual effects over the heated ground. Arrive in Ejina Qi by late afternoon or evening.

  • Day 5: Black City, Ruins and Poplar Landscapes around Ejina Activities: Khara Khoto (Black City), Five-Pagoda-Temple area, Da Tong Cheng ruins, poplar forest zone Drive distance: around 120 to 180 km total Drive time: around 3 to 4 hours Trekking time: around 3 to 4 hours of site walking Altitude: around 900 to 1,000 m Overnight: Ejina Qi

Spend the day exploring the archaeological and landscape highlights around Ejina. The centerpiece is Khara Khoto, also known as Black City, one of the most evocative ruined cities on the edge of the Gobi world. Its surviving remains, standing in dry open country, convey a strong feeling of distance from the richer urban centers of China proper. The site is important not only archaeologically but emotionally, because it gives the sense of a lost frontier settlement preserved by dryness and remoteness. You may also visit associated ruins and historic remains in the region, including the Five-Pagoda-Temple area, older urban traces, and the poplar groves for which the Ejina region is especially known. The desert trees add a very different visual texture to the day and help soften the harshness of the surrounding gravel and dune country. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.

  • Day 6: Ejina Qi to the Alashan / Badain Jaran Approach Zone Activities: transfer toward Alashan desert approach, desert geology museum, expedition preparation, meet camel caravan team Drive distance: around 380 to 460 km Drive time: around 6.5 to 8 hours Trekking time: light local walking only Altitude: around 1,000 m to 1,300 m Overnight: camping

Check out in the morning and drive toward the Alashan / Badain Jaran approach area. This is a transition day between vehicle-based overland travel and the camel-supported trekking phase of the expedition. Upon arrival, visit the local desert geological museum area if time permits, then meet your logistic team and camel caravan. Gear is reorganized, water and camp logistics are checked, and the rhythm of the journey changes. Up to this point, the route has been an overland expedition. From tomorrow onward, it becomes a true desert crossing on foot. Camp tonight and prepare for the trekking section.

  • Day 7: Trekking Begins – Toward Tonggutu Lake Activities: start desert trek, first dune and lake section Drive distance: minimal support vehicle movement only Drive time: none for guests Trekking distance: approx. 15 km Trekking time: around 5 to 6 hours Altitude: around 1,200 m to 1,400 m Overnight: camping

Today the Badain Jaran Desert trekking tour truly begins. Set out on foot with the support of your camel caravan and desert staff, walking into one of the most extraordinary dune-and-lake landscapes in Asia. UNESCO describes the Badain Jaran Desert as a region of dense mega-dunes intersected by lakes, a rare combination that gives the area its exceptional scenery. The first day’s walk to Tonggutu Lake is a good introduction to desert movement. The sand is soft underfoot, the ridgelines can be demanding, and the body begins to adjust to the rhythm of walking through dune terrain. At the same time, the beauty of the place reveals itself quickly: lines of sand flowing into hollows of water, distant crests, silence, and constantly shifting light. Camp near the lake.

  • Day 8: Across Easier Desert Ground to Little Nuoritu Activities: trekking between lake basins and dunes Drive distance: none for guests Drive time: none Trekking distance: approx. 10 km Trekking time: around 4 to 5 hours Altitude: around 1,250 m to 1,450 m Overnight: camping

Today’s walk is shorter and easier than yesterday’s. Trek from the lake zone through rolling dunes and lake-edge terrain toward Little Nuoritu. Because the distance is more moderate, there is more time to appreciate the details of the environment: wind-shaped crests, the contrast between harsh sand ridges and calm water basins, and the way each lake seems to create its own enclosed world. This easier stage also helps the group settle into the expedition pace and conserve energy for the longer days ahead. Camp beside the lake.

  • Day 9: Trek to Hatertu Activities: continued desert trek deeper into the dune system Drive distance: none for guests Drive time: none Trekking distance: approx. 13 km Trekking time: around 5 to 6 hours Altitude: around 1,300 m to 1,500 m Overnight: camping

Continue trekking through the heart of the desert toward Hatertu. The route deepens the sense of remoteness. By now, the outside world has largely disappeared from view and the desert begins to feel self-contained. Distances are measured by dune lines, lake pockets, and the pace of the caravan rather than by roads or settlements. This is the kind of day that makes the Badain Jaran Desert trekking tour memorable: there is no single monument at the end, only the growing experience of moving through a vast and highly sculpted landscape.

  • Day 10: Long Trek to Hiler To Activities: one of the longest desert walking stages Drive distance: none for guests Drive time: none Trekking distance: approx. 15 km Trekking time: around 6 to 7 hours Altitude: around 1,350 m to 1,550 m Overnight: camping

Today is one of the most physically demanding stages of the trek. Walk onward to Hiler To, crossing a longer section of dune country. The terrain can feel repetitive at first, but that repetition is part of the desert’s power: every crest resembles the last until differences begin to reveal themselves through shadow, angle, texture, and the occasional sudden appearance of water. The day requires patience and steady pacing. Arrive at camp tired but rewarded by one more evening in the dune-and-lake world.

  • Day 11: Trek to Nuo To, the Great Lake of the Desert Activities: trek to Nuo To lake Drive distance: none for guests Drive time: none Trekking distance: approx. 13 km Trekking time: around 5 to 6 hours Altitude: around 1,300 m to 1,500 m Overnight: camping

Today’s destination is Nuo To, often described as one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert. It is precisely this combination of immense dunes and unexpected water that makes the desert so distinctive. UNESCO’s World Heritage description emphasizes the remarkable concentration of lakes among the mega-dunes, which is one of the defining features of the property. Arriving at a major lake after hours of sand walking creates a powerful emotional contrast. The place feels almost unreal: still water enclosed by high dunes, a quiet blue mirror inside a dry world. Camp here and enjoy one of the trek’s most memorable desert nights.

  • Day 12: Final Trek to Badain Jaran Temple Activities: last trekking day, Badain Jaran Temple Drive distance: none for guests Drive time: none Trekking distance: approx. 13 km Trekking time: around 5 to 6 hours Altitude: around 1,250 m to 1,450 m Overnight: camping

This is the final day of trekking. Walk through the last dune section to reach the historic Badain Jaran Temple, the surviving lama monastery in the desert, traditionally dated to the mid-18th century in local travel literature. The approach to the temple is memorable not because it is architecturally grand in the conventional sense, but because it stands in such an improbable landscape. A functioning religious site set among giant dunes and hidden lakes carries a sense of resilience and isolation that perfectly matches the character of the desert itself. Here you say farewell to the camel caravan and reconnect with the vehicle team. Camp nearby.

  • Day 13: Desert Exit, Yinderitu Holy Spring and Binutu Dune Activities: jeep exit from desert, Yinderitu spring, Binutu dune climb, transfer toward Alxa Youqi / desert exit town Drive distance: around 180 to 260 km depending on exact exit logistics Drive time: around 5 to 6 hours Trekking time: around 1.5 to 2.5 hours including dune ascent Altitude: around 1,200 m to 1,600 m Overnight: Alxa Youqi or similar desert-edge town

Leave camp early and travel by jeep out of the desert system. Visit Yinderitu Holy Spring, one of the striking water phenomena of the region. In such a dry environment, any enduring spring or lake has a special presence and often a strong local reputation. You may also make a climb on foot up Binutu Dune, sometimes described as one of the highest and most impressive dunes in the area. This provides a final elevated perspective across the sea of sand and makes an excellent closing experience before leaving the wilderness zone behind. Overnight in a town near the desert exit area.

  • Day 14: Transfer to Zhangye via the Hexi Corridor Approach Activities: long overland transfer toward Zhangye, possible en route stop depending on timing Drive distance: around 430 to 520 km Drive time: around 7 to 9 hours Trekking time: short comfort walks only Altitude: around 1,400 m to 1,600 m, descending slightly toward Zhangye Overnight: Zhangye

Today is a major transfer day from the desert world back toward the cultural corridor of Gansu. The landscapes gradually change from dune country to more settled sections of the Hexi Corridor, the historic route that linked central China with Central Asia. Depending on the final departure point from the desert and the road timing, short stops may be made on the way. Arrive in Zhangye by late afternoon or evening.

  • Day 15: Zhangye, Wuwei and onward to Lanzhou Activities: Mati Si, Dafo Si, Wuwei Confucian Temple, Leitai Han Tomb, transfer to Lanzhou Drive distance: around 520 to 620 km total Drive time: around 8.5 to 10.5 hours total Trekking time: around 2 to 3 hours of temple and site walking Altitude: Zhangye approx. 1,500 m; Wuwei approx. 1,500 m; Lanzhou approx. 1,520 m Overnight: Lanzhou

This is a full cultural transfer day linking several major Silk Road sites. Begin with Mati Si (Mati Temple) near Zhangye if time and early departure allow. Travel references consistently describe Mati Temple as a major grotto-and-mountain temple site in the Zhangye region, about 60 km from the city. You may also include Dafo Si (Giant Buddha Temple) in Zhangye, one of the most important historical Buddhist sites in the city and strongly associated with the Western Xia and Silk Road heritage of the area. Current travel references continue to highlight it as one of Zhangye’s best-known monuments. Continue eastward to Wuwei, one of the historic cities of the Hexi Corridor. Wuwei is still described in Gansu material as lying at the eastern end of the Hexi Corridor and preserving important Silk Road-era remains. If timing allows, visit the Wuwei Confucian Temple, commonly regarded in tourism materials as one of the major Confucian temple complexes in northwestern China, and the Leitai Han Tomb, famous for Han-period finds and strongly associated with the city’s Silk Road importance. After sightseeing, continue onward to Lanzhou for the final overnight.

  • Day 16: Departure from Lanzhou Activities: hotel check-out, airport transfer Drive distance: around 20 to 40 km Drive time: around 45 minutes to 1 hour Trekking time: none Altitude: Lanzhou approx. 1,520 m Overnight: none

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your departure flight. Your Badain Jaran Desert trekking tour ends today in Lanzhou, after an unusual journey linking frontier history, archaeological ruins, Buddhist monuments, remote desert trekking, and Silk Road cities. Check out and transfer to airport for departure flight.
