If you’re ready, this blog has everything you need to know for a worry-free trip

Traveling to Tibet

Tibet is a restricted country that doesn’t allow independent travel, so you’ll need our help for your trekking trip. At Tibet Shambhala Adventure, we provide prearranged Tibet trekking tours and secure the necessary travel permits.

We recommend getting a Chinese visa, especially if you’re boarding a train or flight from China. Remember to get your Chinese visa at least one month before your trip because we need it to secure your Tibet travel permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau. (You don’t have to worry about this if you’re a citizen of countries that have mutual visa exemption agreements with China.)

Besides your travel permit and visas, you’ll also need extra permits for Tibet trekking, which only a licensed tour operator like us can arrange.

How to get to Tibet?

There are three ways to get to Tibet for your Trekking trip:

  • Via flights from major cities in China or Kathmandu to Lhasa.
  • Travel by land from Kathmandu to Lhasa. This is recommended if you prefer to take it slow and have a lot of time to spare since it could take anywhere from 4 to 5 days. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views on the route’s rugged highways.
  • Travel by train aboard the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world’s highest rail track. It starts in Beijing and takes about 40 hours to Lhasa, with impressive landscapes that include tunnels, mountain passes, vast plains, and high-altitude lakes starting from Xining. Note that you can only book train tickets through a tour operator like us, so don’t think twice about asking us!

When is the best time to go trekking in Tibet?

You can visit Tibet all year, but Tibet trekking is best experienced in spring and summer, specifically from April to October. The weather isn’t too harsh during this time, and many treks are accessible because there’s no snow.

Additionally, many Tibetan festivals occur around these seasons, particularly the Saga Dawa (a month-long celebration of the birth of Buddha, Nirvana, and enlightenment). During your tour, you might also experience the Nagqu horse racing festival and the week-long Shoton festival.

Know before you go

One of the most important things to know before going on a Tibet trekking adventure is that you must be in good physical health and condition.

If you’re new to hiking, take the time to build your stamina. Experts advise going on multi-day hikes elsewhere and traveling to high-altitude areas before you attempt to trek in Tibet. This is because the entire country is on a plateau, with an average altitude of 13,000 ft (4,000 m) above sea level. Plus, most treks will take you above 16,400 ft (5,000 m). If you’re inexperienced and unable to acclimatize to these conditions, acute motion sickness will prevent you from going further.

Note that even highly experienced hikers and mountaineers should still prepare for their Tibet trekking trip. We recommend the following:

  • Get Acetazolamide or Diamox before you go, and start taking it at least a day before you fly to Lhasa.
  • Take a lot of time to rest and spend at least 2-3 days acclimatizing in Lhasa before you start your trek.
  • If you experience light-headedness, headaches, shortness of breath, nausea, and other symptoms of acute motion sickness during your trek, you must immediately go to lower altitudes.

Best places to trek in Tibet:

Tibet trekking itineraries involve plenty of breathtaking places, but here are the most popular ones:

  • Mount Kailash Pilgrimage Trek (medium to difficult)
  • Everest Kangshung Trek (moderate to difficult)
  • Ganden to Samye Trek (very difficult)
  • Gyama Valley Trek (medium difficulty)

Things to pack and wear:

Make sure you have warm clothes, even if you’re traveling in the summer, autumn, or spring, because temperatures can drop at higher altitudes. We also recommend investing in high-quality winter gear and layering your clothes to stay warm.

If you need more advice, you can always contact the Tibet Shambhala Adventure team. We’ll make sure your Tibet trekking trip is safe, fun, and memorable. Call +86-13908907271 or email us!

Planning your tour with Tibet Shambhala Adventure

In this blog, we will share the simplest way to plan tours to Tibet. Here are some steps to preparing and planning your tour.

Step 1: Get the necessary documents

You will need a passport, a Chinese visa, and the required permits to enter and explore Tibet. Let’s take a look at each requirement.

Applying for a Chinese visa

If you don’t already have a passport, you’ll need to apply for one. If you already have a passport, make sure that it remains valid for at least 6 months from the beginning of your trip, with sufficient blank pages for the visa.

You must apply for a Chinese visa from your home country if you’re traveling through China on your way to Tibet. It’s advisable not to mention Tibet as one of your destinations in your visa application to avoid complications. Instead, list a few Chinese cities as your travel destinations.

Note that citizens of countries like Japan, Singapore, Mauritius, Belarus, and a few others may not need a Chinese visa due to visa-free travel agreements with China for short stays. If you’re eligible for visa-free travel, simply provide us with a scan or photo of your passport so we can proceed with obtaining your necessary permits.

Are you traveling through Nepal?

Another way to get to Tibet is by traveling through Nepal. In this case, you need a Chinese group visa, which the Embassy in Nepal can provide.

Securing Tibet permits

Once you have your visa, we can begin processing your permit application for tours to Tibet. Please provide us with clear copies of your visa and passport at least 20 days before your travel date. We assure you that we will handle all the necessary permits for your tour.

You’ll need these permits to board a plane or train to Tibet. If you’re traveling from China or Nepal, we’ll ensure you have the original permits in hand, so there’s no need to worry.

Step 2: Choose your tour

We have a wide range of tours to Tibet that you can browse on our website! You can pick one depending on how long you want to stay, the destinations you would like to explore, your budget, and your preferred activities. If you need help choosing, don’t hesitate to ask us, and we’ll help you make an informed choice.

Types of tours

If you want more flexibility and freedom to explore, we recommend booking one of our private tours to Tibet.

At Tibet Shambhala Adventure, we offer itineraries like the Tibetan Culture & Nature Tour, Central Tibet Cultural Tour, and Tibet Everest & Namtso Tour.

We also provide itineraries that cater to special interests, such as motorbike, trekking and hiking, mountain bike, train, winter, family adventure, and peak climbing.

Step 3: Determine how to get to Tibet

By air:

Flying is the quickest and most popular method to reach Tibet, with numerous flights linking Lhasa to major Chinese cities. To ensure a smooth boarding process, we will provide you with a Tibet Travel Permit. We’ll greet you at the airport upon your arrival.

By train:

It takes around 40 hours to reach Tibet by train from major cities in mainland China, but the beautiful views will make the trip worthwhile!

Overland:

There are several overland routes connecting Tibet with China, India, and Nepal, each offering stunning views. The journey through Everest and the Friendship Highway is particularly notable for its beauty and interest. If you’re coming from China, you can take one of two highways from Chengdu to Lhasa, or you can take the route from Xining.

Step 4: Pack right

Depending on the season and your activities, we can give you a list of suggested items to bring. If you’re going on trekking tours to Tibet, be mindful of the limit porters can carry (which is usually around 8-10kg). You might need to hire a pack animal or leave some things in the hotel or vehicle if you exceed this limit.

Don’t forget to check the airline’s luggage allowance if you’re flying to Tibet, and remember to leave extra room in your luggage for souvenirs if you plan to buy any.

Start planning your tour!

Everything You Need to Know About the Tibet Travel Permit

Are you planning to visit Tibet this year? If so, you’re in for an exciting journey, especially if adventure is what you seek. Tibet is a top destination for hikers and trekkers eager to explore stunning landscapes and ancient territories with views of the Himalayas. When you choose to travel with us, we guarantee a smoother and more enjoyable experience. We take care of all the details for you—including obtaining the Tibet travel permit—for a worry-free trip.

At Tibet Shambhala Adventure, we have over 23 years of experience as a local travel agency in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital. As locals, we have unmatched knowledge and expertise in arranging different itineraries and adventures in Tibet, including trekking, mountain biking, train, peak climbing, family adventure, and winter tours. We are known to provide the most personalized services courtesy of our seasoned, educated, and well-trained staff. You can definitely count on us whether you need help planning your trip or getting the necessary Tibet travel permit.

What is the Tibet travel permit?

The Tibet travel permit is one of the most important documents to possess in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), alongside the Chinese visa. This permit will allow you to get around and visit the places in your itinerary.

The travel permit in Tibet is an official two-page document that contains the following information:

  • Page 1: Details about you, the tourist
  • Page 2: An outline of your itinerary

The Tibetan Tourism Bureau is the only authority that can approve your itinerary. We advise planning your trip and obtaining your Tibet travel permit ahead of time because not everyone can alter their travel plans once they are set. Generally, the permit is issued within 15 to 20 days. However, processing times may vary, especially during local festivals or when the Tourism Bureau is closed for holidays.

Applying for the permit

Before you get the Tibet travel permit, you need a valid passport and a Chinese visa. If you don’t have these documents, you can apply for them from your home country.

Are you entering Tibet from Nepal? If yes, then you’ll need a Chinese group visa from Kathmandu. Don’t hesitate to ask us for tips and advice! We’ll walk you through the process to eliminate your guesswork and ensure a stress-free experience.

Once your Chinese visa is ready, send us a clear photo or a scan of the passport page with the visa page and your photo, and we’ll take it from there. We’ll need these pages to apply for the Tibet travel permit on your behalf.

When your permit is ready, we’ll provide the original document if you’re flying to Tibet. If you’re traveling by train, we’ll send a clear copy you can print and use for boarding. Be sure to carry it with you throughout your trip. If you’re coming from Nepal, be sure to have your Chinese group visa and meet our guide at the airport to secure your Tibet travel permit.

You might need more than one permit!

Depending on where you are going, you might need two or more permits to get around in Tibet. But you don’t have to worry about that because we’ll take care of everything for you. Here are the types of permits that you might need for your trip:

Tibet travel permit

This is the main permit for your trip. We ensure you receive the original permit if you are flying or taking a train from mainland China to Tibet. We can mail the permit to your hotel before your departure to Tibet or send it to the airport, where you’ll catch a connecting flight to Lhasa.

If you’re traveling from Nepal, you only need a copy of your permit. We’ll arrange for a guide to meet you at the border or airport with your original documents if you’re traveling overland.

Alien travel permit

Besides the Tibet travel permit, you will need an alien travel permit if you are traveling to:

  • The East of Tsedang to Samye, Ranwu Lake, or Basum Lake
  • The Everest region or to the West, including Ngari, Kailash, and Gyirong
  • Shalu or Sakya monasteries near Shigatse

Don’t worry because our team will arrange everything for you when you arrive in Tibet. The Alien Travel Permit can be obtained only in Tsedang, Shigatse, or Gyantse, depending on your travel plans, so we cannot secure it in advance. Rest assured; we only need 1-2 hours to get one.

Military Permit

Some areas require a Military Permit, especially if they border other countries. If you’re traveling to the Gyirong border between Nepal and Tibet, Mount Kailash, Ngari, Guge Kingdom, and Manasarovar Lake, we’ll arrange the necessary paperwork to get this document for you.

Getting the Tibet travel permit and other necessary documents will be a breeze when you travel with us. Allow Tibet Shambhala Adventure to take care of your trip for a worry-free adventure. Call +86 13908907271 or send us a message here.

Things to do and where to go

Below are some of the top attractions and activities to consider including in your Beijing city tour:

Discover the over 600-year mystery and history of the Emperor’s Forbidden City

No city tour in Beijing is complete without visiting the Forbidden City. Situated in the heart of the city, it’s an ancient palace complex that once housed 24 Chinese emperors for over 600 years. Today, the museum shows the rich cultural heritage of the country and is best explored by walking for hours through the imperial palaces, central axis, gardens, and pavilions.

Tiananmen Square

From the Forbidden City, you can drop by Tiananmen Square to explore Mao Zedong’s mausoleum and the Monument to the People’s Heroes. This historic landmark is also one of the world’s biggest city squares.

Hike the Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is another must-see destination on your Beijing city tour. Known as among the greatest wonders of the world, it’s just a 1.5 to 2-hour drive outside downtown in Mutianyu—one of the wall’s best-preserved areas. This less-crowded section offers breathtaking scenery. For convenience, toboggans and cable cars are available to take you up and down the wall. Visitors usually spend 3 to 4 hours here, providing ample time for photography and some hiking.

Stroll or ride a rickshaw along the Hutong area

The Hutongs feature courtyard residences in traditional alleyways, making them vastly different from the imperial gardens and palaces. The best way to explore this area is via a stroll to glimpse the local life, although you can also ride a rickshaw.

Experience the Temple of Heaven

Emperors used to visit the Temple of Heaven to pray for a good harvest and to worship. Today, the temple complex has an awe-inspiring imperial structure. You can join the locals for Tai Chi exercises in the park in the morning.

Visit Confucius Temple and Guozijian

If you love Chinese culture, be sure to include these destinations in your Beijing city tour. Confucius Temple has been around since 1302 and is dedicated to the great Chinese teacher and philosopher. Meanwhile, Guozijian or the Imperial Academy hosted higher learning from the Tang Dynasty.

Climb Jingshan Park for panoramic views of the city and the Forbidden City

This historic and beautiful park is in Central Beijing, just north of the Forbidden City. It’s the perfect vantage point for viewing the ancient palace complex and seeing how it contrasts with the modern buildings and skyscrapers of the central business district.

How many days should you tour Beijing?

The length of your Beijing city tour should depend on how much you want to see and your interests. We recommend spending at least 3 to 5 days to make the most of its attractions, culture, and history. However, if you only have one day, we can take you to see the highlights with a custom tour that includes the Forbidden City and Mutianyu (The Great Wall).

The best time to visit

The best time to go on a Beijing city tour is in the spring, from April to May, and in fall or autumn, from September to October. It’s when the weather is pleasant and mild, with comfortable temperatures and clear skies for walking and hiking. These months are also less crowded and typically more affordable compared to summer (the peak tourist season).

Spring is also a great time to enjoy the flowers in bloom, such as peonies and cherry blossoms. The weather is pleasant for cycling and visiting more outdoor attractions.

Winter from December to January tends to be cold. That said, the charm of the city blanketed in snow (coupled with fewer tourists) might make this season appealing if you’re comfortable with the chilly temperatures.

Explore Beijing with us!

Let our experts at Tibet Shambhala Adventure plan your Beijing city tour for a more unforgettable and authentic experience. We carefully design these tours to your needs and budget, whether you require a flexible itinerary or a more exclusive way to travel. Call +86-13908907271 to get started!

Namtso Lake, also known as “Heavenly Lake,” spans an area of approximately 1,920 square kilometers, making it the second-largest saltwater lake in Tibet. Its unique geological formation stems from tectonic activity, creating a stunning landscape surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains. Hope COVID 19 is ending up in the roof of the world finally

Tibet Travel: Lhasa News on Covid 19

Since it has already been 12 days after the COVID 19 has been spreading in Tibet Autonomous Region. Shigatse and Lhasa city has been completely shut down. These two are the most important destinations when the travelers travel to Tibet. Lhasa is the most and first destination of the most of the travelers when they travel to Tibet and Shigatse is the second largest city of Tibet and it is the must stop city when the tourists travel to Mt Kailash or travel to Mt Everest or to the border between Nepal and Tibet.

The first case of COVID 19 was found in Purang county in Tibet which is one of the famous counties in Ngari region where it used to have kingdoms and many very important monasteries and historical sites. Nowadays, it is another border between Nepal and Tibet and when the tourists travel to Tibet from west Nepal, they cross Purang border and travel to Mt Kailash. The distance from Purang border to Mt Kailash is only around 120km. Just after one hour and half from Purang county, you can see Mt Kailash and the most famous two lakes, Mansarovar and Rakshastal lake respectively.

The latest news of COVID 19 in Lhasa on Aug 16 was published that there were 218 asymptomatic infection on that day but there was not a single confirmed case that day so until now, there are 1283 asymptomatic infection and among them, five of them were already discharged from the hospital. Sofar, there are 32 confirmed cases in Lhasa and 195 confirmed cases in Tibet Autonomous Region.

Before the COVID 19 was spread in Tibet, it was reported more than 60000 domestic tourists were traveling in Tibet and till now there are around 6000 tourists who are still in Tibet where some of them have been quarantined and some of them could not travel back since their hotel is located in the high risk area.

The fist lock down of the Lhasa city was from 12th Aug till 15th Aug morning and it has been extended to 18th Aug in the morning. The lock down is continued and probably extended to the end of Aug. All the schools, government offices, private companies were completely closed and people were not allowed to exit their residential quarters.

Sofar, through the government’s great support and hard work, the people are getting enough supplies and have no problem to stay at home. Let’s wish that the COVID 19 will end up in the roof of the world finally.

Since Tibet did not have COVID for the last two and half years except only the case that was confirmed from a Chinese tourist who entered to Tibet when the COVID was beginning in Wuhan province in mainland China. We were really hope that Tibet is only place where COVID did not appear but in the end COVID 19 came to Tibet after almost three years of roaming around the world.

If Tibet remained a pure place where there was no COVID, we were really hoping that Tibet will be opened to foreign tourists in the end of 2022 but the hope and plan was again destroyed. Many of our beloved travelers have been waiting for almost three years to travel to Tibet. I hope sooner, there will be chance to bring everything back to normal. Let’s pray to the GOD. Good luck all from Tibet.

Many of the local residents in Lhasa are beginning to travel around the Lhasa city known as Linka in Tibetan. Since the Covid is still spreading in mainland China and around the world, the Tibetans don’t have chance to travel outside Lhasa so the Linka which means summer picnic is becoming popular especially for the last two years during this pandemic.

Lots of families, relatives and friends gather together and go to picnic places which are not far from Lhasa city. There are several nice destinations of picnic places around Lhasa city which are Tadong village which is on the way to the airport at the distance of around 30km distance. Xie village which is to the east side of Lhasa city at the distance of around 15km and Penam village which is to the further east side of Lhasa city at the distance of around 37km. The most beautiful picnic place among them is the Penam village as the valley of the Penam village is dominated by beautiful Tibetan traditional houses, beautiful green barley fields and rapeseed, beautiful green pasture lands and a big nomad camps.

During your trip to Tibet, instead of visiting lots of monasteries and temples, you can add one day travel around the Lhasa city to have picnic with the local Tibetans. You can experience to talk with local people, get to know more about Tibetan culture and you can experience how to milk the Yak, how to make butter tea, how to make Yogurt etc. At the same time, you can have around 4-5 hours trekking in the valley and at the same time, if you like to ride horses or Yaks, you can also experience that.

If you are going to have a Tibet trekking in your trip program, a day travel around the Lhasa city is very important as you can go to a little high altitude than Lhasa city and you can do a half day hiking in the mountain so having this much activity can help you to acclaimatize to the high altitude and it will definitely help you to get used to the altitude and make sure that you will not have a problem of altitude during your Tibet trekking.

There are also many other places that you can travel around the Lhasa city. Example, you can take a day trip to Tsurphu monastery and on the way, there is also a very beautiful picnic place and you can enjoy having picnic with local Tibetans. There you can experience the packed local Tibetan traditional food. The tradition of Tibetans when they have picnic is that they prepare a lot of food for the picnic and make all the food ready from home. Usually, they bring lots of steamed Yak meat, steamed Potatoes, breads, Yogurd, milk, tea, butter, Tsampa etc. If you go to any kinds of picnic places without taking your own food, don’t worry that you will get lunch easily as those Tibetans will invite you to their places and offer you meals with them.

There is another good place to travel around the Lhasa city which is a day trip to Ganden monastery or Darkyepa monastery and on the way, you can also find several different kinds of picnic places and one of the picnic places underneath the Ganden monastery is kind of popular picnic place for local people in Lhasa as this picnic has a very nice stream river and in the river, the children can play by sailing boats in the river and they can sail from here to there.

Nyingchi travel to Tibet tips

In this Tibet road trip article, we are going to share some important Nyingchi travel tips and give you a detailed information of  how to make a 4 Day Lhasa Nyingchi Shannan self-driving loop tour.

Day 1: Lhasa-Darksum lake-Nyingchi, 2900mts/482km/6 hours drive. Meilin International hotel

After around 9.Am, we gathered In front of the intercontinental hotel in Lhasa, started our first day destination of 4 Day Lhasa Nyingchi Shannan self-driving loop tour and we drove through one of the most beautiful highways in Tibet and pass by Medro Gongkar county where the Ganden monastery is located and Rutok hot spring.

On the way, we enjoyed a great view of the autumn scenery of yellow tree leaves, yellow grasslands, beautiful Tibetan houses and different kinds of cattle and sheep were being grazed on the fields. Before Passing Barla mountain pass tunnel, we also saw a beautiful view of the snow capped mountain and Yak on the pasture land just next to the snow mountain. Today’s most important scenic spot is the Darksum lake which is recognized as one of the best 5***** scenic spots in China. The driving distance from Lhasa to Darksum lake is around 4 hours drive. Here we are also going to give you about Nyingchi travel tips whether you had a greater time if you could drive into the scenic spot with your cars instead of the scenic spot buses with other travelers.

From Lhasa until we reached a village called Bahe, it is a high way and from Bahe village, we had to leave the high way and joined a countryside road to Darksum lake at the distance of around 39Km. Eventhough the road was narrow, the road condition is very good.

In general, all the vehicles have to be stopped at the entry gate of the Darksum lake scenic spot and all the passengers had to take the scenic spot public bus to the Darksum lake at the distance of around 7Km with other travelers  but when you traveled with us for our 4 Day Lhasa Nyingchi Shannan Self-driving loop tour, we requested Nyingchi Tourism Bureau to allow all our travelers that they could directly drive the vehicles to the Darksum lake without changing the scenic spot buses which is a special gift and surprise to all our participants. Everybody felt that they were taken care of in a special way and indeed enjoyed this different, special, and unique self-driving trip with us so it always better to find a right Nyingchi travel tips through a right local Tibetan travel company.

Another special and surprised gift to our customers is that we arranged our picnic lunch at a very unique and quit place at the shore of Darksum lake where other tour groups could not reach. As soon as all the vehicles arrived at this beautiful place, our staff immediately took out the equipment of outdoors including table, chairs, cups and all the packed meals. We also prepared hot water, sweet and butter tea and offered them a great hot picnic lunch. Everybody indeed enjoyed the picnic lunch at this beautiful lake shore and all the members, especially the self-drivers asked us to take group photos in order to keep this beautiful memory by taking photos and videos.

Since we were taking this trip during China National Holiday, the weather is extremely nice and the water of the lake is so blue and green that you could not express yourself how beautiful this Darksum lake was. The island in Darksum lake where the most sacred temple of Guru Rinpoche is located, there were many Tibetan pilgrims and they were visiting the main temple of Guru Rinpoche, offering money, incense, flowers and white scarf and praying for the sake of all sentient beings. It was a great time to walk around the temple in the island as you could really see the most beautiful viewpoints of the Darksum lake and the snow-capped mountain which is located surrounding the Darksum lake.

After we finished the sightseeing around the temple in the island, all the self-driving members gathered at the parking area and drove back to Bahe village. From Bahe village, we took the Lhasa to Nyingchi highway which took us one hour and fifty minutes’ drive. The scenery was still very beautiful and the mountains on both sides of the highway became greener and greener and finally you could see there was densely forest around Nyingchi prefecture so Nyingchi is totally a different landscape place comparing to other prefectures in Tibet and Nyingchi is called the eastern forest region of Tibet as most parts of Tibet are more plateau and desert.  We stayed in Meilin international hotel which is a four-star hotel and the hotel is located in the center of Nyingchi city.

For this first day of our 4 Day Lhasa Nyingchi Shannan Loop tour, we would like to give a couple of Nyingchi travel tips. Firstly, if you are a bigger group, it is better to drive earlier from Lhasa in the morning. Secondly, you must find a right travel agent who can give you some special service such as you can directly drive to the Darksum lake instead of changing vehicles at the Darksum lake scenic spot, instead of eating in the same crowdy restaurant, your company would rather arrange a nice and quit place to enjoy the picnic lunch. Thirdly, Choose the right hotel with a good and safe parking area as it is very important to park your cars safely.

Day 2Nyingchi-Serkyim La pass-Lulang international forest village, 3700mts/70km/1hrs 50 minutes-Lulang-Milin Hilton, 3600mts/113km/2 hrs 25 minutes

After breakfast, by around 8.30 in the morning, we started our second day of Lhasa-Nyingchi-Shannan loop tour. Began from our hotel to Lulang forest village, the road condition is very good but always had better to drive slowly as the road was quite narrow and there were quite many trucks and cars. The scenery on the way was full of forest on the both side and a couple of Tibetan village. After around one hour and twenty minutes, we reached Serkyim la pass at the elevation of 4728mts above sea level. To give a good Nyingchi travel tips of visiting Namcha Barwa, we recommend you to start the trip early in the morning from Nyingchi city so that you could see the mountain very clearly.

All the members of our group were very lucky because when we arrived on the top of the pass, the weather was extremely nice and the view of the Namcha Barwa snow mountain was tremendously beautiful and clear. We saw the entire view of the snow mountain and saw that hundreds of people were taking photos of the mountain as everybody knew that usually it is very rare to get a chance to see Namcha Barwa snow mountain in such a beautiful and clear weather.

After having a great time on the top of the pass, we drove down to Lulang forest village. Once all our members arrive in the Lulang international forest village, we started riding horses in the beautiful green grassland and played Kongpo Tibetan traditional arrow shooting game which was very interesting. Another very important thing that we experienced was that we had the most famous Chicken hot pot with different kinds of dishes. Chicken hotpot is the most delicious and authentic meal of Lulang International forest village. To give a good Nyingchi travel tips is that it is always better to choose the head quarter of the hotpot restaurant in Lunang as it provided the most clean and tasty hotpot there.

After lunch, we drove back to Nyingchi through Serkyim La pass and continued driving to Milin county along the Niyang river and the Yarlung Tsangpo river. The distance from Lulang forest region to Hilton hotel in Nyingchi is around 120km. The road condition from Nyingchi Bayi to the hotel is very good. It is a highway drive and the scenery was very beautiful.

The Hilton hotel was located in a very beautiful and quit place in Miling county in Nyingchi. The hotel was a great resort where you could take meditation, or taking a walk in the forest or swimming or exercising in the gym. We had a nice afternoon, relaxing, swimming and having a good dinner. We had a Buffet dinner in the hotel and it was quite good but the dinner was pretty expensive so if you were considering on your budget, you could also do order in the Chinese styled restaurant. To give a good Nyingchi travel tips, it is better to avoid the cities and stay in a quite place like Hilton hotel in Miling county in Nyingchi which is a little far away from the county seat.

Day 3Hilton hotel-Miling county-Kyimdong village, 136km, 2hrs 30 minutes drive-Gagong waterfall gorge, 55km/-Nang county,3550mts/ 60km, 45 minutes drive

We had breakfast by around 9.00 in the morning and started our self-driving journey from Hilton hotel to Nang county. The road condition is very good and the scenery was beautiful and unique. We were driving along the Yarlung Tsangpo river and on the way, we stopped in a village called Kyimdong village which is the junction to go to Yumai village which is a bordered village between India and Tibet China and the direct road to go to Nang county. At Kyimdong village, we visited a small factory of Tibetan traditional paper where they produced Tibetan traditional paper. Kyimdomg was the village where it used to produce all the traditional paper including the Tibetan currency note in the olden days. The paper was made of different local tree leaves and the paper was very unique and environmental.

According to our Nyingchi travel tips, it is better not to drive to Gyatsa or Tsetang directly from Miling county or Hilton hotel, instead you could spend a night i Nang county as there are many things to see in Nang county such as the birth place of the thirteenth Dalai Lama, Pal Choede Gon, the largest monastery in Nyingchi, the 2500 years old walnut tree, Gagong waterfall gorge, Lei tombs, Bobolang glacier etc.

After visiting Kyimdong Tibetan traditional paper producing factory, we drove to Lieshan ancient tomb, located on the southern slope of Lie mountain, about 1.5 kilometers northeast of Lie village and there are more than 180 tombs. They seemed to have longer history than Tubo Dynasty in Tibet but sadly most of the tombs were already empty.

After visiting the tombs, we drove to Gagong water fall gorge at the distance of around 55km. The scenery along the Yarlung Tsangpo river was beautiful and there were some beautiful villages too. Just before reaching Nang county at the distance of around 25km, we crossed the Yarlung Tsangpo river and drove to Gagong water fall gorge. On the way, we saw a group of monkeys, playing in the fields but since they were not very familiar to the strangers, even if we gave them fruit, they slowly ran away. However it was very interesting to see such a big group of monkeys in a very remote area.

The Gagong waterfall gorge is 150 meters long, 7-8 meters wide, and has a minimum flow of 0.8 cubic meters per second. Seeing the Gagong waterfall, you will deeply understand the peculiar beauty of “flying down three thousand feet, suspected to be the Milky Way down ” The majestic momentum of “a waterfall in the sky for a long time, the sound falls to the world”. “Flowers reflect the shore of the new forest, and the clouds open waterfall springs.” The beautiful face. We took a short break in the mountain and ate snacks and drank sweet tea while we were taking photos of this beautiful waterfall.

After enjoying a great scenery, we drove back to the main road at the distance of around 7km and continued to Nang county. Nang county was a very important place in the Tibetan history as it was the birth place of the 13th Dalai Lama and it was also the place where it used to have some historical activities more than a thousand years ago as we could see lots of tombs in Lei mountain.

With our Nyingchi travel tips, we put more information about Nang county since most of the guide books or online information, there was lack of Nang county information. It really interesting to spend one to two nights in Nang county to see beautiful natural landscape, snow mountain, glacier,, lakes, waterfall gorge, natural dense forest, historical places and the religious sites.

Day 4: Nang county- Pal Choede Monastery-Chongkang Manor-Gyatsa County-Sangri county-Tsetang city-Lhasa, 3650m/368km/7 hours drive.

After having breakfast, we set off to Pal Choede monastery, the largest monastery in entire Nyingchi region. The monastery was built in 1195 by a reincarnated Lama called Sonam Senge. The monastery is a Gelukpa monastery and there were some relics of the monastery including some of the sacred statues.

After visiting Pal Choede monastery, we continued driving to Chongkang manor which is the birth place of the 13th Dalai Lama. The manor has been renovated pretty well and we could visit some chapels, the chamber, living and sleeping rooms of the 13th Dalai Lama. You could also see the store room, kitchen, and the audience hall etc. The opposite of the Chongkang Manor is the thousand years history of the Walnut tree. One of the Walnut tree is 2500 years history and in 2012, this walnut tree used to give 2 Duns of walnuts which is history record.

After visiting those two important scenic spots, we continued our journey towards Lhasa. On the way, we had a simple lunch in a normal Chinese restaurant and continued to Lhasa via Gyatsa county, Sangri county along the Yarlung Tsangpo river. The scenery was beautiful and the villages along the way were also very beautiful. It was a great self-driving journey and all our members indeed enjoyed the trip very much and they wanted us to plan the next trip for them before we finished this trip.

With our Nyingchi travel tips of 4 Day Lhasa Nyingchi Shannan loop tour, you could find the most important and useful information of a loop tour between Lhasa and Shannan through Nyingchi city and it’s surroundings. This trip is a unique and very beautiful Tibet trip. It is even more interesting to make a self driving tour around this region.

Everest Kangshung Face Trek – Tibet Trekking

featured image

Everest Kangshung face trek is one of the most beautiful treks in Tibet and if you are planning a trek in Tibet, Kangshung face trek is the ideal to choose.

Before telling about Everest Kangshung face trek directly, I would like to explain a little bit of Tibetan history and it’s geography so that you will get more clear reason why you plan a trek to Tibet and why you like to travel to Tibet.

According to Tibetan history, Tibet lay under a great ocean of water after the universe was first created. Then, by the blessing of Chenrezik, the God of compassion, the waters slowly receded and from the depths rose Tibet, a land surrounded by vast chains of mountains, within a world comprised of four major and eight minor continents.

The geologic history of Tibet and Himalaya presently being pieced together by geologists has fascinating similarities to the ancient account. The Tibetan plateau is actually an accretion of separate continental fragments that collided with the Asian continental over a period of some 200 million years.

A succession of large and small seas, collectively known as the Tethys Sea, was created and eventually drained as each fragment merged with the mainland. The most recent of these bodies of water existed until about 50 million years ago and extended from the Atlantic to the Pacific, between Africa and Europe and between India and the rest of Asia. In the hills to the south of Dingri, near Mount Everest, it is possible to find shell fossils from this ancient ocean alongside the trails.  Even the rock on the summit of Mount Everest was once submerged, although that body of water pre-dates the formation of these Tethys Seas; climbers have found fossils of small marine animals called crinoids imbedded in the layers of limestone near the top.

Tibet is the largest and highest plateau in the world, averaging nearly 4500mts above sea level. Even more spectacular was this collision’s role in the creation of the 3100km-long, chain of Himalayan peaks that span sought and central Asia, boasting ten of the world’s fourteen highest summits including the Mount Everest.

There are many different kinds of nice and beautiful trekking routes in Tibet but if you want us to recommend you the best and the most beautiful trekking routes in Tibet, then Kangshung face trek is the one that you can choose for your travel plan.

The Kangshung face basecamp trek is a 17 days tour in Tibet, starting from Lhasa, visiting the most beautiful world’s heritage sites of the Potala Palace and Jokang temple, the two largest Buddhist monasteries of the world, including Drepung and Sera, one of the four largest lakes in Tibet, called Yamdrok lake, Palchoe monastery and Kubum Pagoda stupa, the most beautiful and largest stupa in the central part of Tibet with more than six hundred years history, visiting Tashi Lhunpo monastery, the largest monastery in the Tsang region or known as the western part of Tibet, visiting Sakya monastery which has more than 1200 years history and inside the monastery, you can visit the largest Buddhist library in the world.

By acclimatizing to the high altitude and visiting those renowned Buddhist and world’s heritage sites, slowly you will reach Kartha Qu or Katha town which is the starting point of Kangshung face basecamp trek. Kangshung face basecamp trek is a 9 days loop trekking to the secluded Kangshung Face Basecamp of Mount Everest begins at Yulok at the elevation of 3690mts above sea level.

Tibet tour-Nyingtri

Two days trip to Nang county, known as Langxian in Chinese . It is the time to take two days trip to Nang county (langxian ) from Lhasa after the train between Lhasa and Nyingtri has been operated since 1st July 2021. It is a great news to share with all our friends around the world that around more than 400km distance of Sichuan Tibet highway train has already been finished and for the tourists from around the world will have more choices of their traveling schedule in Tibet. In around 5-6 years, the train between Lhasa and Chengdu will be completed and the traveling time from Chengdu to Lhasa is around 13 hours so it will make very easy to travel to Lhasa by then.

Prior to the train between Lhasa and Nyingtri, the only option to travel to Nang county is that either you take a car from Lhasa to Nyingtri and then a loop tour to Nang county or driving from Nyingtri to Nang county but now it is much easier than before and it will only take around 2 hours train ride from Lhasa to Nang county and the scenery from the train is very beautiful.

The train station of Nang county is only around 1Km distance from the county seat and the road condition is very good. The elevation of the Nang county seat is around 3200mts above sea level which is much lower than Lhasa. Since the county seat is located at the bank of Bramaputra river and surrounded by many forest, glaciers, lakes and grasslands so there is full of oxygen in the county seat.

In the olden days, Nang county was one of the most important and sacred place for Tibetans as the great thirteenth Dalai Lama was born in Nang county. The family of the thirteenth Dalai Lama was called Tahkpo Langdun which is located to southwest of the present county seat at the distance of around 25km. The road condition is very good and after around half an hour drive along the Bramaputra river, you will reach the birth place of the thirteenth the Dalai Lama.

The place where the thirteenth Dalai Lama was born is called Trungkang in Tibetan which means, the birth home of the 13th Dalai Lama or Trungkang Manor. Nowadays, you can still see the main building of the Trungkang manor such as the reception rooms, family chapels, assembly halls, store rooms, kitchens, guest rooms etc. There are also many relics inside the Trungkang manor that has more than hundred years of history.

Near by the Trungkang manor, there are several huge wall nut trees and most of them have more than a thousand years history. Among them, one of the walnut tree has more than 2000 years history and in 2012, this walnut tree used to have 2000Kg of walnut which is a record in the history.

The place where the Trungkang manor is extremely beautiful as it is surrounded by a beautiful village, located nearby the Bramaputra river, it is full of beautiful walnut tree and the mountain. The Trungkang manor is said to be located on an elephant trunk like a mountain. The people in the villages are very friendly and there is one old man who is 78 years old this year. He is a relative to the thirteenth Dalai Lama and he used to save all the antiques during the cultural revolution and offered them to the manor for free which we can see in the manor today.

Take lunch in the Trungkang manor and then drive back to the Nang county seat. On the way, you will be visiting Parhoede monastery, located in Dolpa village of Nang town and Being on an elephant-trunk-like mountain on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river and it is the largest monastery in Nyingtri region.

From Nang county seat, you will drive to Bobo Nang glacier at the distance of 51km. You will drive around 35km from Nang county towards Miling county and then drive in the narrow and dense forest gorge at the distance of 16km. Eventhough the road condition is not good, the scenery is extremely beautiful. You will be driving through the primeval forest and beautiful water full, later a beautiful landscape of the pasture land surrounded by Yak and nomads.
