These are the trips we personally love to run. Not the easiest routes or the most-photographed stops — but the journeys that, after 25 years of working across this plateau, we believe show Tibet the way it deserves to be seen. Each one was designed by our Lhasa-based team. Each one is led by a local Tibetan guide who knows this landscape the way you know your own neighbourhood.

Why Our Authentic Tibet Tours Are Different

Our authentic Tibet tours are led exclusively by local Tibetan guides — every single one born and raised on the plateau, not hired in from outside.
Tibet Shambhala Adventure holds an official five-star rating from the Tibet Tourism Bureau. In addition, we are fully licensed under the China National Tourism Administration.
We don't believe in rushing. We believe in staying long enough to actually feel a place — which is why our itineraries build in acclimatization time, quiet mornings, and unscheduled stops.
Every tour includes all required Tibet Travel Permits and special regional permissions, arranged by our team in Lhasa before you arrive.
Our guides know which guesthouse near Rongbuk Monastery has the warmest rooms in October. They know which Tuesday the light hits the Guge Kingdom ruins just right. That is what 25 years of local experience actually looks like.

The Shambhala Standard — What Every Tour Includes

All authentic Tibet tours we design comes with the same foundation of practical care:
Oxygen in every vehicle — not as an optional extra, but as standard on all plateau routes
24/7 Lhasa support — our office team is reachable throughout your journey, not just before departure
All Tibet Travel Permits included — standard permits and all special regional access permissions
Local Tibetan guides only — English, French or German-speaking, plateau-experienced, and genuinely from here
Honest altitude planning — every itinerary is paced around real acclimatization needs, not a marketing schedule

"The Tea Horse Road was the highlight of my decade. I've travelled in 40 countries and never felt so connected to a place so quickly."

Our Four Signature Tibet Journeys

1.Mount Kailash & the Ancient Guge Kingdom— Western Tibet Expedition

This is the route that changes people. Mount Kailash is one of the most sacred mountains on earth. But for most travelers, the real surprise is the Guge Kingdom — a 10th-century cliff city carved into the western Tibetan plateau, mostly unknown outside specialist travel circles. We combine the three-day kora around Kailash with Lake Manasarovar and a dedicated visit to Guge, so the journey carries both spiritual weight and genuine historical discovery.
It is long, demanding, and unlike anything else we offer. For that reason, it is also the one our guides talk about most.
Quick facts: Starts and ends in Lhasa · Passes through Shigatse and Ali · Maximum altitude approximately 5,630m (Dolma La pass) · Small group or private · All permits arranged

2. Sacred Yamdrok Lake Trek — Highland & Nomadic Tibet

Yamdrok Lake sits at 4,441 metres and changes colour with the light — turquoise at midday, deep blue at dusk, silver before dawn. Most visitors see it from a single roadside viewpoint for ten minutes. We spend three days walking around part of its shoreline, staying with nomadic families in the evenings and waking early enough to watch the light arrive without another vehicle in sight.
This is the gentler journey in our collection. In practice, however, it stays with travelers just as long as the more demanding routes — because the pace gives room for things to actually land.
Quick facts: 8–10 days from Lhasa · Trekking with yak support · Overnight with nomadic families · Moderate altitude · Ideal for families and first-time Tibet trekkers

3. Ancient Tea Horse Road Expedition — Kham to Central Tibet

For centuries, the Tea Horse Road connected Yunnan and Sichuan with Lhasa — a high-altitude trading route where tea moved west and horses moved east through some of the most dramatic mountain terrain in Asia. This overland journey follows part of that old route through Kham, entering central Tibet from the east. As a result, travelers see a side of the plateau that almost no standard itinerary reaches.
Our guides on this route grew up near it. That matters. The villages, the roadside monasteries, the local accents, and the food all change as you move through the region. For example, the monastery culture in eastern Kham is visibly different from Lhasa — older in feel, less visited, and far more open to genuine conversation.
Quick facts: 12–14 days · Overland by Land Cruiser with trekking sections · Passes through Chamdo and Kongpo · Cultural and landscape focus · Small private groups

4. Kangshung Valley Trek — Everest's Wild Eastern Face

Most people see Everest from the north — from the Tibetan plateau side, via the road from Shigatse. The Kangshung Valley approach shows a completely different mountain. The eastern face of Everest is steeper, more dramatic, and almost entirely without crowds. In addition, the valley itself is rich in wildlife, including Himalayan blue sheep and bar-headed geese.
This is not a route for first-time trekkers. However, for experienced walkers who want to see Everest from a direction that genuinely surprises them, Kangshung is the answer. Our team has been running logistics in this valley for over a decade — which means we know the right campsites, the correct permit sequence, and the best weather windows.
Quick facts: 10–12 days trekking · Maximum altitude approximately 5,200m · Full camping support · Separate Kangshung special permit required · Experienced trekkers only

Tibet Travel Permits & Logistics — Handled in Lhasa

Planning authentic Tibet tours requires more than a good itinerary. For example, western Tibet, the Kangshung Valley, and Kham all require special access permissions beyond the standard Tibet Travel Permit. Many operators cannot arrange these. Because of this, travelers sometimes arrive in Tibet only to find their planned route is not accessible.
That does not happen with us. We arrange every permit in-house from our Lhasa office — including Tibet Travel Permits, Alien Travel Permits, Military Zone Permits for western Tibet, and special trekking area permissions. In addition, we provide the supporting documentation needed for China visa applications. As a result, you travel with confidence and without last-minute complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes these tours "authentic" compared to standard Tibet tours?
In practice, the difference is route design and guide knowledge. Standard tours follow the Lhasa–Shigatse–Everest corridor with large groups and fixed schedules. Our signature journeys include lesser-visited regions like the Kangshung Valley, the Guge Kingdom, and the Tea Horse Road — routes that require local knowledge, special permits, and guides who have actually traveled them many times.

Do I need special permits for these tours?

Yes — most of our signature routes require permits beyond the standard Tibet Travel Permit. For example, western Tibet and tea horse road require a Military Zone Permit. The Kangshung Valley requires a separate area permit. We arrange all of these as part of every itinerary we design.
Are these tours suitable for first-time visitors to Tibet?
The Yamdrok Lake Trek and the Tea Horse Road Expedition are well suited to first-time Tibet travelers who are in good health and have prepared for altitude. The Kailash expedition and the Kangshung trek are better suited to experienced travelers. That said, we design every itinerary around the specific group — so contact us and we will advise honestly.

How do I get a quote or start planning?

The best way is to email us directly at sales@shambhala-adventure.com. Tell us which journey interests you, your travel dates, group size, and any specific interests or physical considerations. We will come back within a few days with a realistic first outline — no obligation, no generic PDF.

Designed by Dawa — Founder, Tibet Shambhala Adventure

Curated and personally verified by Dawa, who has traveled every route in this collection multiple times across different seasons.
Dawa was born in Lhasa. Every route in this signature collection has been traveled by him personally — not once, but in different seasons, in different conditions, and with different kinds of travelers. When the Kailash route was first added, he walked the entire kora before recommending it to a single client. When the Kangshung permit system changed, he went to Ali himself to understand the new requirements.
That is not something you can replicate from a foreign office. It is built from 25 years of being here.
