Tibet Permit: Your key to access Tibet.

featured image

One of the major FAQ about getting into Tibet has been the Tibet Permit, a document which supports your entry into Tibet. It is important to note that the approval on your Chinese Visa doesn’t really mean that you can get entry into Tibet. You will be required to apply for the Tibet Permit separately through your chosen travel agent in Lhasa.

There are only two ways getting into Tibet. One from Kathmandu and another from the mainland China. For those who are making their Tibet Trip from Mainland China, it is required to send across a copy of your visa and passport to your travel agent in Lhasa to apply for the Tibet Permit which usually takes about 15-20 business days to process.

Once it is approved, your travel agent in Lhasa will send the original Tibet permits to your temporary mailing address in China accept the city of Xining in Qinghai province in China where a colored-copy of the Tibet Permit works to board your train to Lhasa. Therefore as a tourist coming into Tibet from Mainland China, it is essential to note that you have to inform your travel agent in Lhasa about your flight details, whether it is a direct flight or a connecting flight because if it is direct flight, your Tibet Permit carry the name of the city where you are flying directly into Tibet. If it is a connecting flight, your Tibet Permit should carry the name of the connecting city to Tibet and not the origin city

For instance, when a tourist coming to Tibet from mainland China by flight on the same day and if it is a connecting flight for example from Beijing to Chengdu and from Chengdu to Lhasa, your Tibet Permit should carry the name of the connecting city i.e. Chengdu in the above example and not Beijing . The checkpoint in Beijing airport will not ask you to show your Tibet Permit but the check point in Chengdu will definitely ask you to show your Tibet Permit because it is where you are entering into Tibet and that’s why it is also called Tibet Entry Permit. Same rule applies to the train journey as well.

If you are making the journey to Tibet via Kathmandu, Remember to note that you don’t have to apply for the China Visa from your origin country in order to get into Tibet. You will have to send your passport copy to your travel agent in Lhasa and the travel agent in turn will proceed with the application of visa invitation letter to the Tibet Tourism Bureau in Lhasa and once it is approved, travel agent will send the visa invitation letter to our Kathmandu representative who will assist you to apply for the China Visa which usually takes about 3-4 business days. It is also referred as a Group Visa, given on A4 paper. Therefore it is important to allow 3-4 business days to complete your China Group Visa application and plan your itinerary accordingly. The new business working days of Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu is from Monday till Friday. If you have applied the China Group Visa on Monday, it will granted and deliver to you latest by Thursday.

When you are coming to Tibet from Kathmandu, you are not required to have your Tibet entry and road permits with you. You can board your flight with your China visa to Tibet and your Tibetan tour guide at the airport will take care of all the necessary Tibet entry and road permits and help you to clear China custom.

We can apply Tibet permits for all the tourists except someone who are diplomats, journalists and government officials. People who are diplomats, journalists and government officials should go through Foreign Affairs Office of China based in Lhasa.

“Professional and organized, personalized tour”

We always thank and appreciate our clients share their stories, comment, photos and videos with us and allow us to post them on our blog. Alexis E with her group of friends from Canada, American and Taiwan travelled with us recently for the Tibet Classical Tour and wrote this details about her Tibet trip:

“I traveled to Tibet with Shambhala Adventure in October 2017 for one week, over the Golden Week holiday. I began my communications with Dawa in late June; we communicated through email at first and then switched over to WeChat, which made the communications much easier and quicker.

We were a group of seven friends traveling together, from Canada, America, and Taiwan. There were some difficulties with the visas at first for the Taiwanese members of our group, but eventually Dawa was able to sort out the visas for everyone. We were able to travel together in Lhasa, but had to have separate cars outside of the city due to the visa arrangements. Please be aware of this if you have a wide variety of nationalities in your travel group, and check with Dawa about the visas as far in advance as possible. Dawa worked very hard to ensure that the visa situation was sorted out, but there were times during planning where we were unsure if the visas would be gotten.

The tour was a private “Tibet Classical” tour of Tibet, starting in Lhasa and then traveling to Tsetang, Gyantse, and Shigatse. The cost for a private tour was very reasonable and only slightly more than it would have been on a large group tour. This extra cost (around 50 usd) was more than worth it to have the flexibility of travel and planning. It was a mix of seeing natural sites (glaciers and lakes) and religious sites (temples, monasteries).

The tour guides were wonderful and extremely informative (we had two guides, one in Lhasa and another outside of Lhasa). They arranged all of the little details of every day (tickets, meals, transportation, police checks, etc.). The guides were able to answer all of our questions with lots of details and information. They were also very responsive to what we wanted as a tour group when it came to scheduling for the day, which we really appreciated as it allowed more time at some spots and less at others.

Overall, I highly recommend Shambhala Adventure for traveling in Tibet. They were professional and organized, responsive and personalized. It was amemorable trip!”

Prostration: An act of spiritual purification of our Body, Speech and Mind.

featured image

The Meaning:

Reference from every Buddhist source has Prostration as an act of devotion to the Triple Gems i.e. The Buddha, The Dharma and The Sanga. In Tibetan word, it is translated as Chak Tsal.  Chak refers to free from all negative deeds or Karma we have cultivated. and Tsal refers to seeking for purification. It takes a great deal of effort to rationalize the psychology behind Prostration.

How and Why we prostrate?

In Tibetan Buddhism, an act of Prostration required oneself in standing position, folding the hand together with Thumbs inserted inside. The act of gesture is then followed by placing the folded hand on the forehead to signify  taking refuge or seeking purification of body. The folded hand then placed on the mouth to represent seeking purification of speech. Finally it is placed right at the heart to seek purification of mind.

Selflessness is the Key

In Tibetan Buddhism, it is required to give utmost importance to all the sentient beings by removing the selfness. In the other word, observing our Ego.  The act of prostration starts by taking refuge in Triple Gems or the Three Jewels of the God in Buddhism. ( Kyab Dro). It is then followed by praying for all the sentient beings which includes six realms of (Hell, Hungry Ghost, Animal , God, Human and Non-Gods). It helps in balancing the harmony in our body and developing our inner happiness.

Medical Significance of Prostration

Just the way it helps in bringing about spiritual significance, prostration also has quite a few medical significance which the western medical practitioner always wonders about. Prostration helps in dissolving our body energy therefore it helps in our blood circulation in a prefect way. Neurology and Cholesterol patients are often advised to do prostration by the Tibetan traditional medical doctors and it  really works in helping the patients to better his/her health Status.

Tibet as a Spiritual Destination

In Tibet, Prostration can be seen mostly infront of Jokang Temple. Western tourists are often amazed by the very act of prostration as a way to seek purification of Body, Speech and Mind.  In olden days, pilgrims from all parts of Tibet are destined to reach Lhasa just by doing full prostration all the way from their home. During your trip to Tibet, you will witness a lot of Tibetans, doing prostration around the most sacred joking temple and Mount Kailash ( Gang Kor) and Mansarover Lake. Even in a small typical Tibetan family. It is accustomed to do prostration in their small chapel during morning and night just before going to bed

Changes:

There is a dramatic change in the age  group of people who are doing prostration in Tibet. In the olden days, prostration is often associated with older generation of Tibetans ( age group between 45-65). However, these days, there are more and more young Tibetans who are devoting in Buddhism and doing prostration in and around Tibet. These changes show how spiritual the Tibetan people are no matter whether you are far away from Tibet or not.
