Eco-tourism: A way for an environmentally sustainable and responsible travel

Some of us forget what travelling is actually about. We deem it as a fun-time-out from our hectic routines, which it is. But in our quest to find an escape from our daily work-life routine, we need not forget the mannerisms of living and of giving back to this planet which serves to sustain you. You can still have a blast and yet feel satisfied with yourself at the end of it that you didn’t cause any mishap to the people you were with and the places that you went.

Tibet Shambhala Adventure seeks to encourage the tourists who visit Tibet to abide by an eco-friendly tourism and adventure. We have internationally trained Tibetan staff that will provide assistance on how to practice responsible tourism and will let you become someone that gives back to the planet by protecting its environment. Now, eco-tourism is not only about leaving lesser carbon footprint or garbage in your travel, it is also about economic sustainability and reduction of any social, behavioural, and psychological impacts.

For the former, we tend to use local porters and local horses to carry equipment of our tourists hence minimizing the carbon footprint. We also have an apt management of the garbage whereby we gather up all the wrappers and leftovers from our trekking and do not leave them lying around the whole way. We also collect the garbage if we visit a place in order to encourage environmental protection.
Now, for the latter, we use the locals as our staff to improve their financial condition. We also use different trekking routes in order to benefit the locals and every year, we try to explore new trekking routes in the remote villages of Tibet in order to benefit the locals who don’t have any links with cities or do not get the chance to earn money in other industries.

We think that eco-tourism is also about building the sensitivity of the tourists by making them bond with the ground realities of the places they visit and to understand the lives lived by the people in that place and to take back that understanding with them. We aim to provide unique experience for the tourists by organizing unique trekking and tour routes. In order to make their Tibet trekking tour more authentic, we try to arrange a local Tibetan family visit or a day tour to a Tibetan nomad camp even though it is a challenging work in Tibet. Within the city tour, we are much happy to introduce to the tourists the local owned restaurants and hotels in order for them to get a better understanding of the region which can prove to be beneficial for the Tibetan natives as well.

Through our tour guiding and trekking services, we aim to accentuate our cultural heritage and to provide a means of support for the local communities. We believe in long term sustainability and are averse to the idea of short term profits as we have enthusiastically subjected our services to the principles of eco-tourism.

Let’s have an adventure of your lifetime with us where you are consciously aware of your surrounding and where you build your inner satisfaction by not just travelling and sightseeing the most beautiful of mountain and hill areas but to actually hear the sound of nature in the wilderness. Let’s travel with us to have an emotionally beneficial experience by connecting with the nature and the people that it sustains with its beauty and sacrifice. And let’s travel the earth to give back what it is losing: an environment that sustains all life on earth.

When Should You Be Visiting Mount Kailash?

featured image

Mount kailash is absolutely one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world and visiting Mount Kailash is once in a life time journey. It forms part of Trans Himalaya that is present in the western part of Tibet region in China. The reason why there is so much awe surrounding the mountain range because it has a line of interesting mythology and history behind it.

According to Hinduism Shiva, the believed founder of Yoga, sat in meditation with his wife parvati in the summit of the mountain named Kailasa. One description in the Vishnu Purana of the mountain range states that its four faces are made up of ruby, crystal, lapis lazuli and gold. It is located in the heart of the mountain ranges and symbolize the lotus. From the point of Indian Pilgrims, visiting Mount Kailash is a must once in their life time and they believe that all their bad sin will be cleared after their visit to Mount Kailash and taking a holy bath in the lake Mansarovar.

According to Jainism the other name for Kailash is Mount Meru. The Jains believe that the mountain next to Mount Kailaash is where the first Jain received liberation (moksha). Bon religion considers Mount Kailash as the seat of their Lord Buddha Shenrap that they believe their Lord came from heaven to the top of the Mount Kailash and give teachings from there.
According to Buddhism, the Mount Kailash is believed as the sacred seat of Samvara or Demchok in Tibetan which is one of the most revered and famous tantric deities in Buddhism and lake Mansarovar as the mental creation of Samvara. Buddhism holds the Mount Kailash as the most exalted position than the most out of all the religions. It is treated as a major site of pilgrimage by a lot of Buddhists and believed even all the small mountains surrounding Mount Kailash are also very sacred mountains. As a Buddhist, visiting Mount Kailash is very important in their life, especially during Saga Dawa festival or full moon of the lunar month of Tibetan calendar, you can see thousands of Tibetan pilgrims are visiting Mount Kailash and many of them do prostration around Mount Kailash Kora which has 53Km distance where all the tourists take two full and half days’ time to complete the Kora.

Now that you heard of so much history and mythology surrounding this mountain, you are sure to want to visit this range. However, visiting Mount Kailash, this just doesn’t mean you need to prepare your time and necessary documents but it is very important to find a right local Tibetan travel agent like Tibet Shambhala Adventure who knows all the technical and general necessary information of the trip to Mount Kailash such as when is the best time of visiting mount Kailash, what kind of weather you should be ideally aiming for. what kind of clothes you will be wearing, what kind of health you should fit to the average altitude of 4500m-5000m of the entire tour.

The best time to visit Mount Kailash is from mid-May to July and then from September to the end of October. This is the best time that you can visit Mount Kailash considering the level of global warming. You want to be able to look at all the snow that graces the peak of the mountain, but it should not be so cold that you can barely move. Before the best time for visiting Mount Kailash is as all throughout May and June, and then September.

At first the locals of the mountain did not make it too easy for the eager tourists to visit the place considering its importance in the holy scriptures of a lot of religions. They would not want a place of worship for many to be polluted to such an extent that religious practice would not be possible. But now they have let go of the reigns a little bit and more foreigners are allowed to be able to have a visit to this snowcapped wonder.

Good quality guest hotels and more and more simple clean guest houses have also been established around the Mount Kailash which not only makes easier way to travel to Mount Kailash, but also the comfort of the Kailash trip has been improved very much. Day Tour to Nomad Camping On The Southeast Side Of The Great Lhasa

featured image

Recently Tibet Shambhala Adventure set up a picnic project and decided to have an office staff summer picnic and a day tour to nomad camping and treated them to a unique adventure in the Panam Township of Taktse County which is located to the south east of Lhasa city. In the one hand, we wished to get a relaxing time for our staff and in the other hand, we wanted to explore something different and a new day tour around Lhasa that no other tourists have been able to do, so we decided to have them try a new hiking route southeast of Lhasa.

After travelling a distance of 40km, we reached the upper valley of Panam township where the beautiful nomad camping side is. Since it had not been visited by outsiders before, and thus not advertised, we were not ready for the stunning scenery of the humble town. The valley is unbelievably gorgeous, adorned with the classic scene of beautiful green villages set upon the lush green grass and the backdrop of the cloudy blue gray sky. It certainly was a stark, and pleasant, contrast from the boring white cement walls and full of traffic of the city.
The members of the staff chatted happily with their coworkers, whilst observing the awe inspiring nomadic way of life and enjoying their day tour to the nomad camping. The land is flooded with strong and fierce looking Yaks, which the native nomads treat as family pets.

Yaks have been the most important animals of the nomads in Panam town for years and are well known for the delicious milk that they produce. Our staff was treated to the scrumptious Yogurt that had been made from the Yak milk, while visiting the tents of the nomads. But that was not it. Our staff was to participate actively in the lifestyle of the nomads.

They got to hear the interesting stories of the nomads, who were the exemplar of individuals that are full of life. They then learned of the ways the nomads and their families would survive on a day to day basis in the remarkable town of Panam. The nomads live a way of life which is an interesting contradiction to that our 9 to 5 city life. They pasteurize their animals, milk from Yak, get butter from the fresh Yak milk, do campfires, and also cook their food on those fires.

So, to give our employees a break from their everyday desk jobs, we decided to have a day tour to the nomad camping and let them become nomads by experiencing the authentic life style of Tibetan nomad. The staff trekked around the beautiful hills, tended close to the animals, cooked on the campfire and just had a blast sharing wild and funny stories as the heat of the fire gently enveloped them.

The staff even got to meet some more locals from other places who also came to have picnic and got to know about them. They all made teams together and enjoyed various activities such as Yak riding, hiking in the valley, printing the Tibetan prayer flag by themselves in a Tibetan traditional way, and have the Tibetan circle dance.
All of these coupled together allowed the employees to press the pause button and just refresh. They got to get out of their mundane routine and tried something fairly unique.

We often take our staff to restaurants or bars to relax from busy life But usually they are the places where the employees can go themselves with their friends as well. However, this new place which is hidden in the depths of the country was something very unusual for the employees. Which, they really appreciated and thanked to Tibet Shambhala Adventure and had a kind of family feeling that the company is taking good care of them and practicing the responsible tourism as well. At the same time, we discovered a very good and unique new product to our customers and we will propose this beautiful day tour to the nomad camping soon.

You too, should experience this gorgeous day tour, at least once in your life when you are in Tibet!
At Tibet Shambhala Adventure, we offer you the best and unique Tibet tour and trekking packages to explore around Lhasa and all over Tibet like a local and every year, Tibet Shambhala Adventure explores two to three new Tibet tour and trekking products by our company’s creative, professional and experienced Tibet travel experts. The Shoton Festival is one of the most revered and anticipated events in Tibet that attracts the attention of thousands of tourists that plan their trip to attend this festival every year. The festival is one of the most eminent features of the Tibetan culture and is rooted deep in the traditions and history. The name of the festival stems from the Tibetan word ‘shoton’ which means yogurt – which is why it is also called the Yogurt Festival.
The History
The history of the Shoton Festival dates all the way back to the 16th century and even before that when it was practiced as an annual religious custom. Tsongkhapa master, the Buddhist saint had initiated a spiritual practice for monks to indulge themselves in secluded meditation in monasteries between May and June according to the Tibetan lunar calendar which is the middle of the summer in Tibet and referring to the western calendar, it is the July and Aug usually. The Gelukpa monasteries made this kind of monastery rule is because during the middle of the summer, there is full of small insects and worms on the grassland which are very difficult to see when you walk over.
The purpose was to avoid walking on the grassland where there is insect and worms which can be killed by your step on it, instead, in order to get rid of all other sins, pray and repent for their ill-doings. The discourse of meditation spanned several weeks, and when it was over, the monks would come out of seclusion, and local Tibetans would serve them yogurt and perform traditional Tibetan opera.
When is it celebrated
The Shoton Festival is celebrated in midsummers, on July 1st of Tibetan lunar calendar – which is why the date changes every year on the solar calendar. This year, the Shoton festival started on 11th August and end on August 18th, 2018.
Highlights of the Festival
The inclusion of a number of rituals, customs, and practices, over the course of time has made the shoton festival a lot more interesting and exciting. The preparations start weeks ahead of the festival, and as the date draws near, flocks of tourists start landing in Tibet from across the world.
The festival begins with a massive gathering of thousands of Tibetans gathered donned in ethnic Tibetan attires, all around the Drepung and Sera monasteries. Lamas and monks holding the giant Jampa Thangka, Matreya, the future Buddha or the Thangka of Buddha Shakyamuni, display on the western hill of Drepung monastery and as the sun rises from behind the hills, the loud sound of sutra bugle start echoing in the valley. The giant Jampa thangka is hung at the Drepung and Sera monastery, and this marks the official start of the festival.
The festivities continue for days, and hundreds of Tibetans take participate in it religiously every year. Regardless of whether you are a kid or an adult, a Tibetan or a tourist – there are a variety of activities for everyone.
The main highlights of the Shoton festival every year include Tibetan opera performance at Norbulingka Palace, an excellent display of stunts by skilled equestrians, yak racing, and other traditional sports. The itinerary of the festival also includes the ritual of Sangsa, in which Tuja leaves, butter, and Tsampa are burned together to get rid of evil, and the mob throws white Khada on the giant Thangka to catch blessings.
Nowadays, the Shoton festival goes on a week period of time and during this period of time, all the government officials are on holiday and not only thousands of tourists come from different places in the world, but also thousands of thousands Tibetans also come from different regions and they come to watch Tibetan opera in Norbu Lingka and Lukhang garden which is behind the Potala Palace. There is different Tibetan opera every year which is held by different Tibetan opera players from different regions in Tibet.
Facilities for tourists
The Shoton Festival takes place in pleasantly mild weather and is a good option for people looking to spend their summer holidays exploring ancient cultures and traditions. The government, tour operators as well as the local Tibetans make special arrangements to facilitate the tourists and make them feel at home and have more authentic experience of Tibetan culture. However, since there is a high influx of tourists in Tibet during the season, you may get difficult to find hotels and other arrangement of your trip if you don’t book in advance. Therefore, it is suggested that you reserve your trip to Tibet in advance through a reliable local Tibetan tour agency to make bookings on your behalf.

1-The Potala Palace:
The Potala palace is an architectural marvel located in the heart of the Lhasa City.Eventhough there was not a certain historical record who named the Potala or how the name originated. We do know that the most famous minister of Songtsan Gampo in the 7th century called Tonme Sambota who went to India to study Sanskrit and after his studies, he translated a lot of Sanskrit scriptures into Tibetan language. In one of his translated books, he mentioned that Riwo Potala, the mystical abode of Chenresi (Avaloktesvara ) of the God of Compassion in south India was identified with the paradise of Chenresi. Since Songtsan Gampo was widely regarded as the incarnation of Chenresi, and given that he founded the Potala, it seems plausible coined the name for the Palace so the Potala Palace is located on the Red Mountain, also known as Marpo Ri. It was built in the 637 which acted as a royal residence for the King Songtsan Gampo and the Potala Palace was nine stories high during the period of King Songtsan Gampo. However, it was later reconstructed by the 5th Dalai Lama in the year 1645 and used as a residence for successive of the Dalai Lama.
The Potala Palace is divided into two sections, one is the white Palace and another one is the red Palace. The white Palace was the living quarter of the Dalai Lama and the red Palace was the building where all the chapels are. There are golden thrones of the Dalai Lama and tombs of the successive of the Dalai Lama, completely made of gold, gilded with different kinds of precious stones. All the chapels in the red Palace are dedicated to many old sacred statues and the architects of the entire Potala is very special and unique with extremely beautiful old wall painting inside the Palace. 3) Old Dingri to Everest base camp trek
Old Dingri to Everest base camp trek can be started, traveling from Kathmandu to Kyirong border and after spending a night in Kyirong, you can directly drive to old Dingri which is 4 hours drive but we recommend to begin this trek, traveling from Lhasa because you can slowly acclimatize to the altitude by spending three nights in Lhasa, visiting the most highlight of Tibet including the Potala Palace, Jokang temple which are listed in the UNESCO world heritage site. We propose itineraries of old Dingri to Everest base camp trek between 12-14 days but of course Tibet Shambhala Adventure is always happy to customize your Tibet trekking tour if our number of days trekking does not fit your Tibet travel plan.
The trek to Everest base camp from old Dingri is one of the oldest Tibet trekking routes. When Tibet was introduced to tourism in 1984, Everest basecamp quickly became the most popular trekking destination. In the one hand, there were very few vehicles in Tibet at that time and in the other hand, despite being on a road, one had a feeling of remoteness in grand scenery, making this route an outstanding trek.
The trek to Everest base camp of 3-4 days begins in a desert valley to the south of the friendship highway. For almost 15 years, the trek to Everest base camp is followed in the trail valley of Lungjiang village in Dingri prior to the construction of the road from old Dingri to Everest base camp via Pangla pass. Since there was a bigger road from old Dingri to Everest base camp in 2009, the trek to Everest base camp via Lungjiang valley is not interesting any more but Tibet Shambhala adventure explores a new trekking route from old Dingri to Langkor monastery near Tsamda hot spring which is another right hand valley from Dingri to Everest base camp trek. From Langkor, you will trek to Cho Oyu base camp and from Choyu base camp to the foot of Lamna la pass so with this new trekking route to Everest basecamp, you completely avoid the road and again enjoy a feeling of remoteness and off the beaten trail with a fantastic view of Cho Oyu, Everest in the distance. The average elevation of the trek is between 4300-5000m above sea level.
